BLACK MESA WEAVERS FOR LIFE AND LAND

Grace Yazzie, Grandmother
& Sherry Yazzie, Granddaughter

MBM-296. Grace Yazzie. Dramatic Wide Ruins blanket, 53 in. x 30.25 in., in natural white, deep mars red, Navajo tea taupe/tan, fine and even traditional weave with "lazy line" joins, 24 wefts per inch. This weavingwas on sale at the Arizona State Museum, Tucson, in the "Native Goods" Museum Shop, in conjunction with the special exhibition, opening Oct. 23, "Navajo Weaving at the Arizona State Museum: 19th Century Blankets / 20th Century Rugs / 21st Century Views." [SOLD]

MBM-297. Grace Yazzie. Finely woven, handspun Two Grey Hills design, 53 in. x 28 in., in medium dark grey, light grey, black, wild spinach green, deep teal blue, blue, blue grey, with very intricate border, 24 wefts per inch. SOLD, May 28, 2006, at Pagosa Springs, Colorado, Fiber Festival, Navajo Rug Collection Auction, sponsored by Navajo Lifeway (Dine' Be Iina, Inc.).

MBM-298. Consigned by Grace Yazzie, this is a fine example of the raised outline technique developed by the Dine' weavers of Coal Mine Mesa, where a raised outline is created on one side by doubling the wefts on one side in the outline areas and alternating the colors on each weft with a reverse order on each side, similar to a reverse twill weave. Not many weavers do raised outlines. The visual effect to me evokes a gently falling rain coupled with a unique luminosity. This one, woven by Marilyn (last name unknown) of interlocking and opposing zigzags, is especially evocative of lightning and snakes--both of which are associated with rain and water-bringing, 30 in. x 25.5 in. SOLD.

MBM-299. Second of two raised outline weavings by Marilyn, in the technique and style developed by the Dine' of Coal Mine Mesa, done by doubling the wefts on one side in the outline areas and alternating the colors on each weft with a reverse order on each side, similar to a reverse twill weave. Not many weavers do raised outlines. The visual effect to me evokes a gently falling rain coupled with a unique luminosity. This is a very pleasing and well-balanced "squashblossom" motif design, 28.25 in. x 20.5 in. This weavingwas on sale at the Arizona State Museum, Tucson, in the "Native Goods" Museum Shop, in conjunction with the special exhibition, opening Oct. 23, "Navajo Weaving at the Arizona State Museum: 19th Century Blankets / 20th Century Rugs / 21st Century Views." {Sold at Arizona State Museum 2005.]

MBM-300. Grace Yazzie, a powerful soft and handspun weaving of the four sacred mountains and a widening four directions motif in bright red, natural white, black, light grey, and brown/grey, 16.25 in. x 13.5 in. (SOLD at Connnecticut Wool & Fiber Festival, April 26, 2003).

MBM-278. Woven by a relative of Grace Yazzie, this is a very powerful and unusual large weaving--a combination Two Grey Hills and Storm pattern design, tightly woven in all handspun natural colored wool (white, light grey/brown, dark gey/brown, a warm rust/sienna, and natural black, 52 in. x 35 in. , with a weaver's pathway. It has the look and feel of a much older rug. Slightly uneven edges and about an inch of misweaving on an outside edge, though "imperfections," in some ways add to this weaving's character and power. It feels like the work of an older woman, weaving from her earliest memories... SOLD

MBM-282. Grace Yazzie. Another finely woven and imaginative Storm pattern design, 30 in. x 21.5 in., in handspun natural color and commercial wool, white, deep red, rust/sienna, black, and gold.
